Molecular biology is a profound field of science which observes the world around us at a molecular level. It uncovers what ecosystems and the organisms in them are made up of and the fascinating details that are hidden from the naked eye. To further our understandings in this field and explain why it should be pursued by individuals interested in science, we contacted a renowned tenured professor from the University of the Punjab in Pakistan, Prof. Dr. Nadeem Sheikh, featuring our detailed conversation regarding his career and what his opinions are regarding the field:
Question 1: What motivated you to pursue molecular biology to the highest level?
“During my Master studies, I developed a keen interest in molecular biology that led me to pursue my higher studies in molecular biology to earn a Ph.D. degree. I became interested in delving deep into the very building blocks of life, such as DNA and proteins, and understanding how they interact and contribute through various biological functions. Additionally, working as a molecular biologist has the potential to contribute to scientific advancements in fields like medicine and biotechnology which was highly motivating for me.”
Question 2: Over the years, what is the highlight of your professional career?
“Over a period of 23 years of service, the highlights of my professional career are as follows; I got awards of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in 2003 for PhD studies in Georg-August-University, Göttingen, Germany, Charles Wallace trust fellowship in 2008 to visit Imperial College, London, HEC postdoctoral fellowship in 2009 to work in Harvard University (USA), Dr. A.R. Shakoori Gold medal in 2015 and Zoologist of the Year 2019 by the Zoological Society of Pakistan (ZSP). During my career, I supervised 22 Ph.Ds., 50 M. Phil and 40 B.S. research thesis. My team has made significant contributions in the area of molecular biology, and I have nearly 200 research publications in renowned journals and more than 150 conference presentations. My research work has received more than 2000 citations till date. I won two competitive research grants from a national funding agency, and an Erasmus Mundus Project, where the funds were utilized for capacity building of the students for the Exchange Semester. I have experienced working as Director of CAMB (Center for Applied Molecular Biology) in 2016 for a period of 2 years.”
Question 3: How is studying molecular biology seen in the world?
“Studying molecular biology has the potential to transform one's perception of the world. It allows individuals to understand and appreciate the complex and intricate nature of life at its most fundamental level. By exploring the molecular mechanisms that underlie biological processes, studying molecular biology can provide a fresh perspective on the interconnectedness of all living organisms. It highlights the universal principles and shared genetic information that unite all species, demonstrating the remarkable continuity of life. Additionally, studying molecular biology can also shed light on the origins of diseases and disorders, granting insight into the underlying causes and potential treatments. This knowledge can foster a sense of responsibility and empathy towards the natural world and the welfare of all living beings. Moreover, the interdisciplinary nature of molecular biology encourages individuals to think critically and approach problems from multiple angles, cultivating a holistic and systems-level view of the world. Overall, studying molecular biology can open doors to new understanding and appreciation of life's intricacies, fostering a deeper connection and curiosity about the natural world.”
Question 4: What is some advice that you would give to individuals who wish to walk on a similar career path?
“For individuals wishing to pursue molecular biology as a career path, there are several pieces of advice that can be helpful. Firstly, it is important to develop a strong foundation in the basic sciences, such as biology, chemistry, and genetics, as these form the building blocks of molecular biology. Taking advanced coursework and seeking out research opportunities can provide hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the field. Additionally, it is crucial to stay updated with the latest research and advancements in the field by regularly reading scientific journals and attending conferences or seminars. Building a strong network of mentors, colleagues, and collaborators can also be beneficial, as they can provide guidance, support, and opportunities for collaboration and professional growth. Developing strong analytical and critical thinking skills is essential for interpreting complex data and designing experiments. Finally, perseverance and dedication are key traits for success in molecular biology, as research can be challenging and time-consuming. It is important to maintain a passion for the field and to stay motivated even in the face of setbacks or obstacles. With hard work, commitment, and a love for scientific inquiry, individuals can forge a rewarding and successful career in molecular biology.”
